Taste:

  • bitter, pungent (sweet, dense)

Tropism:

  • lungs (heart, spleen, stomach, gallbladder)

Direction of action:

  • descending

Effects:

  • relaxes the lungs

  • raises Fei Qi
  • transforms Tan
  • expels pus

Dosage:

  • 3 – 10 g, standardly 6 g

Contraindications:

  • not suitable for chronic cough due to yin deficiency, not to be used in cases of vomiting and dizziness
