Nature:

  • cold (balanced, yang in yin, ji, strong)

Taste:

  • bitter (pungent, strong, thin)

Tropism:

  • kidneys, urinary bladder, large intestine (pericardium, heart)

Direction of action:

  • sinking

Effects:

  • clears Shi Re

  • eliminates fire toxin (Sheng)
  • clears heat from Shen Xu (Yan)

Dosage:

  • 3 – 10 g, standardly 3 g

Contraindications:

  • deficiency cold of the spleen and stomach, diarrhoea due to spleen deficiency, reduced food intake, morning diarrhoea resulting from kidney deficiency, postpartum fever due to yin deficiency
