Taste:

  • bitter and pungent (sweet)

Tropism:

  • liver and gallbladder (heart, spleen, triple burner)

Direction of action:

  • raises liver qi

Effects:

  • releases the exterior (SHAO YANG)

  • smooths the liver
  • raises YANG (geyser example)

Dosage:

  • 3 – 12 g, standardly 3 g

Contraindications:

  • may damage true yin and fluids, caution is required in case of rising liver yang
