Nature:

  • cooling (slightly cold, ascending, warm, yin within yang)

Taste:

  • sweet
  • pungent (slightly bitter, bitter)

Tropism:

  • lungs, spleen, large intestine and stomach

Direction of action:

  • ascending

Effects:

  • releases the exterior

  • clears heat
  • raises Yang (in Yangming)

Dosage:

  • 1 – 10 g, standard 6 g

Contraindications:

  • must not be administered in cases of rising yang due to yin deficiency, or in cases of dyspnoea caused by rebellious qi
