This spice was widespread in Syria, Greece and Cyprus; in Egypt, it is mentioned in papyri from 1,500 BC. It is now grown in the Mediterranean, India and Mexico.

It is used in baked goods and biscuits, for pickling cucumbers and beetroot, and in the production of liqueurs. In some countries, it is used to season sauces, vegetables and salads.

Anise has a neutral to slightly warm nature and supports the function of the stomach and spleen
