Much like parsley, it was a sacred herb in ancient Egypt, Greece and Rome. It was an herb of mourning and death. It was customary to decorate the tombstones of the deceased with wreaths of celery leaves and to use this spice at funeral feasts as well. Even in ancient times, they knew of celery grown for its root and celery grown for its leaves. Stalk celery is of particularly high quality.

Celery tops, fresh or dried, are used in soups, sauces, vegetable salads and are a component of some spice blends. In folk medicine, it is recommended for purifying the blood and strengthening the nerves.

The tops have a refreshing nature and a sweet-sour taste. It supports the function of the organs involved in digestion.
