It originates from Italy, where it was bred from American squash at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries, and its cultivation spread throughout Europe. It contains 91% water and high amounts of carotene and magnesium. It activates cell metabolism, supports brain function, strengthens muscles and the heart, promotes the excretion of waste products and acids from the body, is suitable for sluggish bowels and constipation, and strengthens mucous membranes.

It is used in thousands of ways in soups, potato pancakes, as a side dish, it can be stuffed, used to make sweets, or added to salads.
