Although we commonly classify it as a fruit, it is a type of vegetable fruit that belongs to the gourd family. Melons are divided into two main groups. Watermelon – Citrullus lanatus, and sugar melon, which belongs to the genus Cucumis together with the common cucumber. It likely originates from subtropical Africa, from where it spread to Asia. Persians were already growing them four thousand years ago, and cultivation spread through them to eastern India and Europe. Wall paintings featuring melons have been preserved in Pompeii. In the Islamic world, it was a very significant fasting food. In the 15th century, thanks to missionaries, it travelled from Armenia to Western Europe. Sugar melons were grown in Eastern Europe between the 4th and 2nd centuries BC.

Watermelon contains 90% water, is a great source of fluids, and is rich in carotene, vitamin C, B6, B3, folic acid, iron, and manganese.
