A traditional Chinese medicine formula authored by the famous Li Dong-Yuan, author of the "Treatise on the Spleen and Stomach" (13th century), in which he focused on the "middle" – the digestive complex – as the foundation ("the ground" – it is the earth element) for the functioning of the entire organism. The formula was later modified into its current form in the 18th century. Its primary indications are dizziness, vertigo, and headaches caused by the presence of phlegm and dampness on one hand, and liver wind on the other. It often begins with a weakening of the "middle," when digestion does not function effectively, leading to the formation of "impure Qi" – dampness and phlegm. Furthermore, the liver, for various reasons (insufficient nourishment, heat, emotions), generates so-called internal wind. Accompanying symptoms often include nausea, a feeling of wanting to vomit, loss of appetite, a "watery" stomach, thirst, and sometimes clouded or confused thinking. It is used for Meniere's disease, dizziness with nausea and vomiting, or for nausea during pregnancy. This pattern can also be a substrate for more serious neurological manifestations, such as a stroke.
The primary herb in the formula is Gastrodia, which has the ability to anchor rising Liver Yang gently, without damaging Yin substances, which is very beneficial. The formula also contains Er Chen Tang – the basic formula for transforming phlegm. Other herbs harmonise and strengthen the "middle," replenish Qi, and unblock the liver. By doing so, we transform phlegm and calm internal wind – the head stops spinning and aching, and walking becomes steady again. The head feels "lighter" and judgment clearer.
In chronic conditions, the formula needs to be administered for a longer period, at least 2-3 months. In acute conditions, it acts very quickly.
