Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • moves Qi and blood
  • attacks "hot" blood stasis
  • tonifies blood, benefits tendons and bones
  • unblocks and opens the channels and collaterals
  • stops pain

Description:

Chuang Shang Run Hua is an excellent blend for external application, light tuina massage, or compresses where the area needs to be "cooled" and moved (i.e., to stop pain). It can be used either alone or in combination with formulas that support healing and pain relief taken internally. The combination of internal treatment and external local treatment always has a higher success rate, but most importantly, the patient feels pain relief more quickly. The basis for this blend is the formulas Die Da Yao Jing (Medicinal Essence for Injuries) or Qi Li San (Seven Li Powder – a weight measure that also represents the same syllable meaning a mile) by the 19th-century physician Xie Yuan-Qing, which was originally designed for both internal and external use. Our Chuang Shang Run Hua is used only externally today.

In the original blend, more than half consisted of dragon's blood resin, which is important for moving blood, breaking up blood stasis, and stopping pain. It is used for both acute and chronic injuries, contusions, tendon injuries, and fractures, and in the blend, it is further assisted in this action by safflower, frankincense, and myrrh. These are followed by herbs that clear heat from inflamed tissues (rhubarb, gardenia, and phellodendron; rhubarb also moves stasis) and angelica (Chinese angelica), which, together with safflower, tonifies and also moves blood. Liquidambar is neutral in temperature but can also move Qi and blood, unblock channels and collaterals, and reduce tissue swelling. At the same time, it acts "anti-allergically" on the skin, and together with the cooling herbs, it helps prevent or reduce potential unwanted skin allergic reactions.

Use until the pain, heat, redness, bruising, or swelling in the injured area subsides; apply 2–3 times a day, or apply as a compress once a day, preferably in the evening after a bath.
