Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • supports the free flow of lung Qi
  • stops cough and wheezing
  • opens the airways and eases breathing
  • transforms phlegm

Description:

The Ke Chuan Pian formula is traditionally used to clear the airways – in the case of a cold wind invasion, which manifests as cough, shortness of breath and wheezing. At the same time, typical "cold" phlegm is usually present, where the phlegm is thin, transparent and abundant. The patient cannot breathe properly, often feels short of breath, and wheezing can be heard. Why does this happen? A cold pathogen penetrates the lung system, where it blocks the free flow of Qi. In the proper cycle of Qi, it should move downwards in the lungs. However, when it cannot flow freely (due to a blockage by an external pathogen), it enters a "counter-flow", rising upwards – and we cough, and because it is also obstructed by the phlegm and the pathogen itself – we wheeze. Furthermore, a weakened spleen can contribute to phlegm production, often due to poor dietary habits (excessive raw and cold foods, too many dairy products in the diet). In addition to herbs that clear the lungs, resolve phlegm, restore the proper mechanism of Qi and stop cough and shortness of breath, the mixture also contains Ku Shen, which has an empirical anti-allergic, naturally antihistamine effect. This is also why the mixture is very suitable for atopic/allergic conditions, for example, when cold-type asthma worsens due to cold. We recognise it precisely by the clear reaction to cold and the large amount of thin phlegm.

Indications:

  • shortness of breath
  • cough
  • wheezing
  • phlegm
  • excessive salivation
  • feeling of heaviness in the chest
  • chills and shivering

Modern effects:

  • colds and respiratory infections in the cold season
  • asthma
  • chronic bronchitis

Tongue:

  • white coating
  • often moist

Pulse:

  • hua (slippery)

Contraindications:

  • presence of symptoms of heat and hot phlegm (yellow, green, thick, difficult to expectorate)

Note:

The mixture does not contain herbs to replenish Qi. Therefore, after the phlegm has subsided and breathing has eased, it is necessary to administer a mixture to strengthen the lungs.
