A traditional formula for painful obstruction syndromes (Bi Zheng) that have arisen primarily from wind and dampness on the basis of internal deficiency. Chinese medicine describes this state as fullness on the surface and emptiness within. Typically, these are conditions we would call rheumatic pains. In principle, it involves the invasion of an external pathogen (in this case, dampness and wind) into a previously weakened organism. The pathogen in the form of wind and dampness blocks the circulation of Qi and blood in the channels, which triggers pain.
The combination of herbs in this formula effectively strengthens the organism, opens the channels, breaks up already formed blockages, and drains wind and dampness from the organism. We could say that this combination of herbs has an analgesic effect; however, it does not merely suppress pain but addresses its cause.
When using this formula, one should avoid damp and cold weather and simultaneously limit cold foods.
