Category: Musculoskeletal system, joints, pain relief.

Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • relieves blood stasis in the lumbar region
  • relieves pain
  • Bi syndrome (painful impairment of the musculoskeletal system, primarily of the joints due to cold, wind, and dampness) – expels wind and dampness
  • warms the yang
  • strengthens the kidneys and musculoskeletal tissues

Description:

It is a well-known fact that the kidneys – their essence and yang – contribute significantly not only to the nourishment of bones but also to other musculoskeletal tissues such as ligaments and joints. When the kidneys are weakened, or when there is repeated unilateral strain on the lumbar region, it is very easy for acute (lumbago after a "wrong" movement, sharp pains often shooting down to the lower limb) as well as chronic problems (long-term lower back and sacral pain) to occur.

The formula contains several groups of herbs: 1) those that move blood stasis, which are traditionally used for both acute and chronic pain, 2) those that expel wind and dampness, which both remove swelling and help to alleviate pain, and 3) herbs that improve blood circulation and nourishment of the lumbar region, strengthening the kidneys that govern the area, both their essence and their yang.

The formula can therefore be used for both acute and chronic pain, not only of the lower back but also of the joints; due to its strong moving and analgesic function, it is particularly effective for acute cases.

Indications:

  • lower back pain (tending to be sharp, acute)
  • hip and knee pain

Modern use:

  • sudden onset of sharp pain in the lumbar region radiating to the lower limbs or groin
  • urinary urgency
  • frequent urination
  • weak urine stream
  • urinary dribbling

Tongue:

  • according to the prevailing pattern

Pulse:

  • according to the prevailing pattern

Contraindications:

  • none known

Note:

The problem usually arises from an inappropriate movement or remaining in a certain position for some time (typically sitting at a computer). It often involves unilateral strain (carrying a child or heavy objects).

When something similar happens to us, it is excellent to have this formula in the home medicine cabinet.
