Use of the formula according to Traditional Chinese Medicine:

  • drains dampness from the lower burner and stops discharge
  • tonifies the middle burner and strengthens the spleen
  • harmonises the liver and spleen, which can then function effectively

Description:

A relatively modern formula from the 19th century intended for the treatment of gynaecological discharge caused by a deficiency of the spleen (digestive complex) and stagnation in the liver area, which can attack the weakened spleen. This leads to the formation and accumulation of dampness, which, because it is "heavy", falls downwards and accumulates in the lower burner area, where it manifests in women as a white to white-yellow discharge without significant burning or odour, precisely because heat or infection is not yet present. The woman exhibits other symptoms of spleen deficiency: she is pale in the face, tired to lethargic, and may also have digestive problems and mushy stools.

The mixture contains herbs to tonify and strengthen spleen Qi, and others to transform and drain dampness – this removes existing dampness and prevents its further formation. Peony and bupleurum soothe and open the liver, while schizonepeta stops the discharge.

In this way, we treat all sources of the problems, and not only do the unpleasant gynaecological symptoms subside, but we also have more energy and a better mood.

Indications:

  • significant vaginal discharge of white or white-yellow colour, without odour
  • vaginal itching with discharge

Modern use:

  • leukorrhoea
  • cervicitis (inflammation of the cervix)
  • vaginitis – inflammation of the vagina
  • oedema during pregnancy
  • infertility
  • glomerulonephritis
  • hepatitis
  • diarrhoea
  • irritable bowel syndrome

Tongue:

  • pale
  • thicker white coating

Pulse:

  • xu
  • ru
  • huan or xi

Contraindications:

  • contraindicated for yellow, thick and burning discharge that has an odour, where liver heat causes the transformation of dampness into damp-heat

Clinical notes:

Dietetics focused on strengthening the spleen and draining dampness is very important, especially regularity in eating and avoiding cold, raw or, conversely, heavy foods.

We usually recommend adding an extract or decoction of Job's tears, which supports the strengthening of the spleen.
